Date Night with Daddy

Trinity and Eddie had a great double date with our hockey pro friend and his daughter. It was Trinity's first blackhawks game and she loved it. Atta Girl! She caught her second wind some time around 10pm.
Trinity and Faith had some Tommy cuddle time.

NYE

We started the morning with a much needed visit to the Westrom house. Ohhh, how I miss them! We headed over to Navy Pier for Winter Wonderfest. It was much busier than last year. It was difficult to get through everything we wanted to see.
The mini Ferris wheel was gone this year. Trinity was excited to go on the bigger one but the line was over an hour long so we had to skip it. Instead we jumped on jumpies, had a foam ball snowball fight, crawled through candy canes, went on a bouncy froggie ride, rode the carousel, rode one of those rides that go around a circle track over little bumps (i have no idea what to call it) and slid down big slides.
We jetted home for a NYE gathering at our house. I made it home 5 minutes before our guests.
The kids rang in the new year around 9:30 but stayed awake until 11:30. We were all a bit tired the next day. We are still recovering.

Pinkalicious

It has been a favorite book of Trinity's for quite some time. It is about a girl who *loves* the color pink and eventually turns pink from eating too many pink cupcakes. Our favorite theater in Chicago, The Emerald City Theater, put on a production of the book. This is our 4th or 5th play at this theater and this was my favorite. Wizard of Oz is playing now and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory look like hits early next year. Go, take the kids! If Everett can sit still for an hour, any child can.

Christmas 2010

The best way to describe our holiday is in pictures...of course. I really know no better way to describe anything really. We started the night of Christmas Eve at my aunt's house. I managed to get them sitting still for a moment to get a picture.
Everett was so excited to get presents he gathered them and protected them, even pretending to sleep on them.
Christmas Morning: Reeve looks a little overwhelmed. He quickly perked up.Trinity loved her Hello Kitty umbrella. Everett got a spiderman one. Her favorite present was her puppy pillow pet, make-up set and a couple new DS games.Everett *loves* his "Woody with a string." All he wanted was a woody doll that talked and a cow pillow pet. He got both.
He wasn't so thrilled about his Buzz Lightyear light up goggles.
We hosted Christmas dinner for 20. I made a 24lb. turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, nutmeg gnocchi and dessert. Family brought potato salad, green bean casserole, bread. Eddie made a beef tenderloin on the grill along with veggies. mmmmmm.Trinity and I made our annual Christmas tree cake for Jesus. This year it was pistachio flavored. We ended the night with presents and cuddles.

Favorite Christmas Books

These 2 books are my favorite for the kids.
"Santa, Are You For Real?" tells the story of St. Nicholas, how he was a real person and how the Christmas tradition got started. It also goes through common European traditions. I got this book because I didn't want to lie about Santa. We come from the mindset that he was real and now the tradition is sort of magical. Trinity *loves* this book. It is a cute story and has *great* scratch and sniff pages that really smell great. It is a big hit even during the off season. We have had ours for 3 years and the scent is starting to fade. I am thinking about getting a new one because it is so very well loved in our house.

Speaking of elves...

we lost ours. Every night Zac is hiding or doing something funny for the kids to find him. It has been the highlight of Trinity's morning since Thanksgiving. On Wednesday morning, he was playing a board game. I remember Trinity introducing him to a friend of mine and then I didn't see him again. At 10:30pm Eddie and I said. "what are we going to do with the elf? Where is the elf?" And so began our journey of the late night elf hunt.
We looked:
In every drawer and cabinet
In closets
In the oven
In the laundry
Under couches, under cushions
Behind the TV
In toyboxes
In the fireplace
In the bathtubs
We snuck into the kid's rooms with flashlights to look in toy bins, closets, in their beds and under them
WE WOKE TRINITY UP and asked her if she had seen him.
I was tempted to call my cleaning lady at 11:30pm to ask if she saw him earlier in the day.
Fearing Reeve threw him away, Eddie went to the curb, got the garbage bag and we dissected the trash. I was dry heaving when I put my hand in cold chili.

After we gave up and tried to think of an excuse to tell the kids in the morning...Zac had a late night helping Santa or something...I put my head on the kitchen island. I look up and saw this.

Trinity had stuck him in the centerpiece and was camouflaged in there.

Elf Attack

Trinity transformed into a stocking elf and then took some crazy pictures of herself.

Christmas in the City.

The weather was a bit warmer today so I took the kids downtown to see the Macy windows and visit the Christkindel Market at Daley Plaza. Every year we do this: we read the windows and head over to the market for a Russian doll, caramel nuts, new ornaments for the tree and to stare at the bratwurst line that is always too long to get one with 3 kids that are fussy.
Every year it is almost impossible to maneuver the double stroller through the mass of people, especially when I am alone. Every year someone is crying most of the time. This year Reeve and Everett shared the spotlight. Every year I leave there ready to collapse in exhaustion.
This year we spent a little longer downtown so we can have a nice lunch together and then head over to my old law firm to say hello. I am always happy to see all my friends and so happy that I no longer work there. The window theme this year was "Yes, Virginia." It was about a girl who wasn't sure if she believed in Santa. Very cute.

Mail Carrier

Trinity had the best time riding in the front seat around the cul-de-sac delivering Christmas cards to our neighbors. Although she insists she does not want this as a career. I guess rockstars are more glamorous.

An Observation Lesson.

I was in Jewel the other day with the three kids. Fun, right? As if grabbing a couple staple items with 3 kids isn't difficult enough, they embarrass me.
So we are walking through the aisles and I see a woman, about my age, with bright pink hair. This is not the first time I see her and think nothing of her. Trinity and Everett thought it was the greatest thing and makes a spectacle out of it screaming "that girl has pink hair!" I shush them and go on my way.
I get to the milk aisle and an 8 year old girl, give or take, with her grandma are there. The girl says to me, "your kids are being silly!" (darn, I thought I was keeping them contained!) I respond with, "I know, they do that sometimes." The grandma says something to her like, "you are silly sometimes too."
The little girl then tells me, "your kids are mean!" The grandma immediately covers the girl's mouth and walks away. I wonder to myself, "why are my kids mean??" I then see pink hair girl talking to the grandma and little girl and realize they are all related. The little girl is pink hair's daughter and the grandma is pink hair's mom. Pink hair loudly says in my direction (sarcastically), "if it is because of my pink hair, I really don't care!" Then she walks away.
I sit there for a second processing it all and then realize that she thinks we are making fun of her and I let me kids do it. I am now appalled. Now, I know they were being loud but making fun of the hair is totally not what they were doing. In fact, they think it was super cool. I give them a mini lesson in "blurting out people's appearances is not appropriate." I then am thankful it was someone with pink hair and not an obese person or a little person or someone who would be REALLY offended by their loud observations. I realize I need to make it right and teach them a lesson.
(Now, I am *very* introverted with strangers and the LAST thing I wanted to do was find pink hair and give her my side of the story but I knew that this moment needed to make an impression on my children so they do not do it again.)
I tell Trinity and Everett they need to apologize. They both say no. Trinity is now too shy to talk even though 5 minutes before she was telling the entire store her private thoughts. I make her. I find pink hair and demand an apology from the kids. They say sorry. I explain how they like pink hair and in no way were we trying to be rude. In no way would I allow my kid's to purposely hurt someone's feeling and in no way would I try to ruin anyone's day. She was very understanding and thankful we said something.
I left the store feeling better and prayed it never happens again. I hope the family left feeling like all was well in the world of expressive, and cool, hair.

Christmas Light Hunt

We have been disappointed with the lack of Christmas lights this year. We did not decorate as much as last year due to the chilly temperatures and slippery roof, I guess everyone else has a similar excuse. It is pretty dark around town.
We strapped the kids in the car for a 2 hour adventure to find some good lights. Here are some worthy mentions. This was Everett's favorite decoration of the night, a simple, plastic nutcracker. He is obsessed with them this year. We have obtained quite a random collection this season. Not sure if this was Trinity's favorite or her must-see. She has been *terrified* of the Grinch for about 2 years. She cannot listen to the song (she asks *every* time we turn on Christmas music if it is going to come on), look at a picture, or hear his name. She calls him "The G!" However, a neighbor down the street had a Grinch blow-up lawn decoration last year and she was always intrigued to go by it to "see if she was still scared of him." It resulted in a lot of bedtime prayers for good dreams and frequent middle-of-the-night-scared-crying. This year the neighbor did not put it up but she has been on the hunt for one. We found one tonight. She stared at it for 5 minutes without speaking. Not sure what tonight will hold.
Sidenote: Last year she was so scared of the neighbor's Grinch that she asked if we can write a note to tell them to take it down. We fibbed and said we did. This year when it wasn't up we said "it must be that note we wrote!" She is now requesting we write another note to put it back up. good grief! We told her it probably popped and has a hole in it!

Santa #3

We visited Santa for the 3rd time today. (Saving my favorite Santa picture for Christmas.) We spent the afternoon with my mom and stepdad to join in some holiday cheer with Mr. & Mrs. Claus. The kids got some cute toys and I got to witness lots of smiles. Reeve was *not* happy to see Santa today.

Slumber

I find few things more precious than an angelic sleeping baby.
